If you are just starting to learn, Yamaha, Mitchel, and Epihone make decent guitars for about $100-$200.
The higher end guitars if you are looking for a great guitar from $500 to over $1000 would be Taylor, Martin, and Gibsons.
You can tell the difference if you hold it and play it. They may feel better and sound better because of the way they are built and the wood used.
I started out with a Mitchel and I still play it.

From $40 to $30 000, for new models; it get higher for undamaged and rare vintage guitars. Up until some $5000 the difference is in the choice of materials (sold wood for quality/expensive models, laminate for chaper/lesser quality ones), the quality of craftsmanship involved, hand-made vs. machine-made, some of it naturally goes on pure cosmetics (rosette, binding, inlays, etc. - all pretty, no effect upon the sound), some of it is simply arrogant overpricing (Gibson, also Martin & Taylor to a certain degree, but not as arroganlty as Gibson). Above $5K you pay for the status symbol & prestige - they don't sound better, play better or anything, just the fact they have a particularly kitchy & tacky ornaments, hand made in 1933, etc. You want a good quality guitar at a reasonable price, you buy Takamine. In terms of price, if it's under $350 at musicianfriend.com and other online stores, it's garbage. Do NOT buy "beginner guitars" of any kind - if you want to be good, you have to think and behave like a great guitarist & not waste time on crappy instruments.

That's like asking what makes a car's price range. There are lots of factors involved in the price range. But, you don't need an expensive guitar to learn to play. There are a lot of nice guitars you can get for around $200. And there are some cheaper models that you can get for around $100 that would be a good guitar for a beginner.
If you are buying a guitar, and have no idea what to look for, try this. Get someone you know who plays to go pick one for you.

I think your best bet is Fender guitars
there awesome and acoustic, and there only and couple 100's but worth it in the end.
many bands and singles members play them..if you know where a
''guitar center'' is then thats the best place for them.
