I'm thinking about taking melatonin supplements to help regulate my sleep pattern. But my question is, if I were to take it just for two to three months to get my body into a good cycle, can I ween myself off of it and still maintain the cycle, or will I still need it if I want to go to sleep at the normal time?

I agree with your first answer. Although the brain does secrete a natural amount of melatonin, I feel that it may be unsafe if you take these suppliments on a regular basis. My reasoning behind this is that there are no long term studies done on many of the herbal and natural suppliments. Although they're "natural", they're still crude. All the companies that sell this will always hype their stuff, and show all kinds of "proof" that their product is the best and safest, backed up by their own doctors. Please be careful. Best of luck to you.

Melatonin doesn't do any good if you are not deficient in it already. If your body produces enough melatonin, then the supplements won't do anything for your sleep, because it means your sleep is being disturbed by something else.

You might want to think about upping your calcium and Vitamin D supplements, as many people are deficient in those, and they help you relax and often promote more restful sleep.

Another couple of supplements that are often helpful for sleep issues are Valerian Root, Hops and PassionFlower. They can be used on an as needed basis, and carry little to no risk of dependancy.

I suggest you try something like chamomile tea or valerian capsules to help you sleep. Melatonin is a hormone.

You really shouldn't use them, at least regularly, if you are under 40.

After that, 500 mcg taken sublingually 1/2 hour before bedtime should be all you need.
