This is a 'dirty little secret' of the organic foods industry. Organic food requires 'organic fertilizer.' The most readily available organic fertilizer is cow manure.

Some cows are infected with a strain of e-coli bacteria that causes illness in humans. Thus their manure is also infected. It is hard (and expensive) to test the manure for the exact version of e-coli that causes disease. (Regular e-coli is also present in all cow manure.)

This is why the FDA has recommended that all 'organic' produce be washed in a disinfectant solution before consumption.
