Tim Burton. I like his dark expressionist style. (If you get the chance watch the 1920s German film "Das Kabinet Der Doktor Calligari" to see a major influence of his).
I enjoy a lot of his films but my favourite is probably "The Nightmare Before Christmas" because I have enjoyed it again and again. I am also a fan of "Edward Scissorhands", "The Corpse Bride" and "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory". I did not think much to "Planet Of The Apes" but this is his only film I did not think was great.

Steven Spielberg (the guy rarely makes a bad film) but the best recent one would be Saving Private Ryan.
Oh and without actually checking I'm fairly sure Hitchcock isn't American?
(just checked on wikpedia he was born in london)

Steven Spielberg......and if I had to chose just one I'd have to go with the classic Jaws. but Indiana Jones (all 3), saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Jurassic Park are all close as well.
