12 Bar refers to the length of musical time. Most blues is written in 4/4 time, which means a quarter note receives a full beat and four of these beats comprise a measure. Progression refers to the chord changes made during the 12 bar blues progression. Most 12 bar blues progressions use 3 chords.. In the key of E.. one could use.. the E as the tonic or one chord.. the 4 chord would be an A7 and the 5 chord would be a B7.
