You really shouldn't be substituting water in your son's diet right now. He is a big kid so he is going to need more fuel to keep that big body going. My son is the same way, he is just a big kid and he eats quite a bit. His dr sees nothing wrong with it and thinks that his growth is just fine as he is growing proportionatly.
Try not to let her comments offend, just let it go in one ear and out the other. My grandmother is the same way, she is constantly saying that my son is a fat baby and that I feed him too much, I do everything that I can to ignore her comments but sometimes I just want to tear her head off, haven't yet tho.

At 4 months, I wouldn't recommend giving any solids, he has 2 more months to go. I wouldn't know about formula as I breast feed. At 4 months I nursed on demand which came out to be every 2-3 hours during the day and every 6 at night. Hope this helps at least a little.

Keep doing what you are doing. Your doing good. Listen to the dr, if there was a problem the dr would of said so. Don't substutite a meal with water, your mother in law wouldn't!
I will be in your position in a few weeks. My son was 10 1/2lbs and 20.75 ins long at birth and at 9 wks he weight 17lbs 2ozs and 24 ins long. He get 7 to 8, 4 oz bottles and I'm also breastfeeding him too. Good luck.

I also have two large babies and also receive the same comments....IGNORE THEM!!!! Your moter in law has no clue what she is talking about. Your baby does not need more water.. that would just cut down on his iron and nutrient intake, bad idea! Listen to your doctor, ignore the in law, and be happy with your baby. Your son is perfect!

at 4 months you can introduce rice cereal but don't give them water, there is no need for water. But rice cereal is fine now, give it to him in the morning, in a bowl mixed with formula and fed by spoon.
Ignore your mother in law, she has no idea what shes talking about.

MIL is probably just going by the outdated advice she got when her kids were babies. Hopefully well-meant, but misguided advice. Your ped. says your son is right on-track with his weight and size; it's only logical that bigger birth-weight babies are going to be bigger older babies if they keep growing at the same rate.
I suggest that when MIL offers unsolicited (or downright WRONG) advice, just calmly tell her that you're following your ped's recommendations. You know, the DOCTOR who went to MED SCHOOL, Ma. ;) If she seems unimpressed, just hand her a slip of paper with his # on it.
I don't really listen to doctors much or believe EVERYthing I hear out of their mouths, but I've used them (or at least reference to them) for backup on many an occasion when it comes to avoiding arguments over parenting/child care.
Good luck!

Do what u feel is best for your baby. There were plenty of people telling me about my own baby but i just used my best judgement. Trust me, its nature. Your baby seems fine. Just don't start on table foods until the doctor tells you.

my nephew was big like that when he was new he ate big but he's not fat now, just big ( he's 9 now). we just call him moose :)
if your child doesn't seem hungry, don't worry. just don't use food as a pacifier as he grows and he'll be fine. his pediatrician had her putting cereal in his bottle (widen the hole in the nipple)
don't know the ratio, ask your ped. if he still seems hungry after you feed him. this will also help keep the food in his belly longer but he turned out fine, just muscular big, not fat

lie to her. tell her that you are watering down the formula. if your pediatrician says your son is ok, then he is ok. its only a "white lie" just to calm her and get her off your back. good luck
