Early in the ratification process, the proponents of the Constitution took the name "Federalists."

Though those who opposed the Constitution actually wanted a more purely federal system (as the Articles provided), they were more or less forced into taking the name "Anti-Federalists." These men had many reasons to oppose the Constitution. They did not feel that a republican form of government could work on a national scale. They also did not feel that the rights of the individual were properly or sufficiently protected by the new Constitution. They saw themselves as the true heirs of the spirit of the Revolution.

The Anti-Federalists was another story not mentioned here.

The Federalists were the politicians that supported increasing the scope government and opposed the system of limited government and more freedom that was the basis for the founding of our country. The Federalists supported Federal control over the banking system which has led to financing of government deficits through printing of money and the inflation that causes. John Adams was an important Federalist. While Adams was President he took actions against freedom of speech imprisoning people who published writing that criticized him and the Federal Government. Adams and the Federalists made laws such as the Alien and Sedition acts that were in a way similar to today's PATRIOT Act in that they were used in the name of national security but in reality attacked Constitutionally protected personal freedom.

Thomas Jefferson was a major opponent of the Federalists and defeated Adams in the election of 1800.

the federalists were more like the northern business men and thought like they would, in contrast to Jefferson who thought more like a farmer or plantation owner. The Federalist papers were the Ideas of Adam, Hamilton , whose so called papers that were published in New York were influential, and without New York's vote the Constitution would had never become law
