I would not exactly call Canada a rich country, but we are huge. Of course half the country is beneath a sheet of ice.
I think I understand the point you were trying to get across, although it kind of came out like anti-american jargon. Essentially, we know a lot about USA (our immediate neighbours to the south) in areas of geography, politics, history, and economy, but the average American really does not know the same amount about Canada.
As others have stated, it could be that there is more interest in USA as they always seem to be in the spotlight. Or it could be that Americans are not as interested in other cultures and countries as they are in their own. Or there could be other reasons.
What you would need to do is compare two other rather large economically-stable countries that border each other (Spain and France?) and ask that same question...how much do the French know about Spain and vice-versa? Is it any better or worse than the Canada/USA situation considering their countries are smaller?

It is just a preference. It is not just he US, the rest of the world does not pay attention to Canada either. Don't put this at America's doorstep, ask Europeans this same question. Also, why do Canadians act as if they know everything about America, yet can only locate about 5 states on the map? Arrogance, or an inconvenient truth?

Waitaminute.....do you have to be American to be "anyone"? Does the average Australian know all that much about Canada? The average East Indian? The average Asian?
Maybe Canadians are just unusually obsessed with their American neighbours.
Just kidding. But food for thought, eh?

The vast majority of Canada is unexplored. We actually know more about the bottom of the ocean than we do about Canada.

Somebody above has got a point. Why should US citizens know us? They don't have our media crammed down their throats, the way we do.
Some things in Canada are really worth letting the world know. Like Calgary...

...for instance.

Most Americans feel that the U.S. is the most important country, and so they don't care enough about the lesser countries to learn about them.
