How do you make alt codes work?

I know the different alt codes but how do you make them work?Do you press alt and the numbers at the same time or alt and then the numbers?Or is there a different way completely?thanks

hold down alt. and press in the numbers on your num pad. You dont need to hold them down. Like

1)Hold alt
2)Press numbers (num pad)
3)Let go of alt
