I was listening to my sons heart with a stethescope and he was sitting on my lap. I would here his heart beat, your normal thump thump, when then it would all of a sudden just beat fast and then normal again. Is this something that is normal?? If any one could help answer this for me please do.. Thank you

All of the other answers so far have been good. I just want to add that there is a condition called tachycardia that causes the heart to beat so fast that the heart is not in correct rhythm. This needs taken care of by a cardiologist. My younger sister had this throughout her life. Luckily it finally did correct itself. She is now 55 years old. She was in the hospital many times throughout the years. One time, she asked me to get her to the hospital as she was experiencing this and by the time I got her there, her blood pressure was 40/40. The emergency room staff gave her an IV of something. I know what it was but I don't know the correct spelling. I will try to spell it phonetically for you: Neosenefrin. This
immediately shot her blood pressure way up. Anyway, she lived.
This is just another possibility for you to be aware of. I hope this doesn't turn out to be serious for your son but agree with the others that you should take him to a doctor for evaluation.

Good Luck and God Bless Both of You!

Make a note of when the rapid beats occur. If it happens every time he breaths, that's quite normal. If not, have his pediatrician do an exam, w/ EKG. If it continues, esp. during exercise (this can be a sign of severe arrhythmia), have the doc schedule a 24 hour "Holter monitor" (for more info. see link below). If anything abnormal is found, the doc should schedule an echocardiogram with a cardiologist.

you might want to talk to a doctor, not someone on here who isn't qualified to diagnose your child. call and make an appt. and explain your concerns with the pediatrician.

this could be a sort of reasons: 1) might be coming down with something 2) could be excited or distressed about something happening around him or in his thoughts and last, could be anxiety.

these things pass....if it keeps up, have hime checked by doctor
