Buy the friendliest one you see. If he comes up to the glass to look at you then pick that one. If he waves at you then definitely get that one. Ask the handler if you can pick him up. They don't have to be tame but wouldn't you want to have one that is already trained?

Don't get one too small - if they're under 6" they can be hard to feed. I'd say try to find one around 8" to make sure.

You want an animal thet's easy to pick up, acts curious about you, has both eyes clear and open (nostrils too!). Look for any signs of burns, missing toes, or scars. These may not be a good reason not to get the animal, but he's had some problems with how he's been kept and may have special needs and nutrition problems as well. You also want to look for signs of external parasites, such as mites. Thes can look like a brown/tan powder or small dark brown-black bumps, usually aroung the eyes, joints, or tail.

Active and alertness. Wide open eyes. If it easily let's you pick it up put it back, if it's instincts are to run you may have a winner.
