Well, if you are a bigger fan of experimenting and looking towards the more unorthodox choice, here are my Top 5 ideas for romantic movies that I have enjoyed recently:

"Der Krieger und die Kaiserin" (aka: the Princess and the Warrior)

Tom Tykwer is most popular for directing "Run Lola Run," but this lesser known film is, to me, just as beautiful and imaginative. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the opening scene in which the main female lead (a nurse at an asylum) gets into an accident (I won't say too much) is unforgettable.

"Punch Drunk Love"

PT Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) takes a challenge from critics that he can't do a short film and a challenge from himself to do the "romantic comedy" thing correctly. He succeeds in both fields, teaming up with a wonderful ensemble: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emily Watson, Luis Guzman and Adam Sandler (shocking me in proving that he really can act if given the right script).

"Amelie"

Audrey Tautou (most recently in The DaVinci Code) pretty much forces you to fall in love with her. It is a wonderful film with a lot of experimental shots and thought-provoking scenes, proving to be hilarious and intelligent (I am convinced it was all about existentialism, but that's me). I've seen it 3 times, so I'd say that's a good sign.

"Harold and Maude"

Probably one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen....I mean it begins with the kid pretending to hang himself to mess with his mom. But it evolves into a very odd love story between a young man and an older woman that would make Mrs. Robinson uncomfortable. Directed by the same guy who did "Being There" in '79 (which is another brilliant movie, but not very romantic).

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"

It's an oldie but a goodie. And I think although some parts may feel antiquated, the themes of acceptance, modernizing perspectives and defying self-definition still hold true. Not to mention Poitier's younger years are arguably some of the best performances on the silver screen. Then fill it in with another classic couple (Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy) and it becomes entertaining on a lot of levels.

Enjoy!
