He should not be judged, good or bad, after the first year of a 4 yr contract. For him to not be a bust, he must do one of the following, during the next 4 yrs.(or whatever yrs he signed for)
1) have a 3 yr stretch avg of 17 wins
2) win a CY
3) win a WS
4) consistently beat the Yanks
5) beat the Yanks in the playoffs
6) be considered the #1 starter for at least 2 seasons

Not many major league pitchers who came out of the West have really been that good. For his first year, Shingo Takatsu was good for the White Sox. The next year - he was cut by July.
I would say thatDice -K (the stupidest nickname of the year imo) will probably be a .500 pitcher, and will only finish 5th in the Rookie of the Year voting.

For $51M just to talk and another $50 to sign this bozo better go 30-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 350 K's. Of course we know that's never going to happen. The question is, how will a triple A caliber pitcher hold up under major league fire? Answer, he won't!! He's going to get lite up like a roman candle.

Considering they spent over $50 million just to talk to the guy, he better be one of the best pitchers in the AL for it to pay off. With the negotiating fee plus the contract itself, and the lack of a solid bull pen in Boston, they need him to win at the least, 16 games this year.

15 wins and a low ERA. How many wins did Beckett have last year? 16? Wasn't he considered largely a bust because of his contract and expectations?
