A friend told me once that she was able to get a cheaper rate by threatening to cancel service and go with another service provider because it was cheaper. As a result, her current provider matched the rate of the other provider so my friend would keep her service with them.
Does anyone know the best way to go about doing this and does it actually work?

The best thing to do is go with a bundle. Or you might want to cancel them and wait for them to make a lifetime reduced price rate. Or you never know, if you call to cancel they may offer you an amazing deal like your friend said.

I used to provide technical support for a broadband company - it never worked at my place of employment.

Keep in mind there are different purchase plans, you may have a higher plan - (IE home buinsess, or faster connection speed, etc...) You might be able to get a lower rate.

Depending on what you do online as well you may need to consider switching services to another company or provider. I don't have cable where I live but I do have DSL - it's only $31.99 a month - but great for my needs.

I did have cable at a previous residence and it was closer to $50 but by throwing in a second package (phone) - which cost the same as my normal phone, they took $10 off my bill a month so it was closer to $40 a month instead.

The company you go through may offer such a service as well that you could look into.

Good luck.

I actually tried this with Comcast (Howard County, Maryland area) and it only partially worked. Comcast was able to come down on a portion of the bill, but not the entire bill and was still more expensive than the competition's package. I ended up switching to Verizon FiOS and overall I'm saving about $20 (USD) over Comcast with pretty equivalent service. One thing that I don't use from either Comcast or Verizon though is my VoIP. I use SunRocket for that and it saves me on the packaged deal from either Verizon or Comcast. Verizon at least offers the same prices with or without the VoIP while Comcast only drops their prices if you include broadband, TV, and VoIP. The SunRocket price works out to be just under $17 (USD)/month if you get their yearly plan.

If you have options, it never hurts to investigate and asks to lower your rates. Same applies to credit cards, you can ask them to lower your interest rates too (sometimes it works, other times it doesn't).

Well, my father-in-law lives in Jersey City, NJ and has ComCast. Unfortunately, ComCast is the only cable provider in his particular area so your friend's trick wouldn't work. You should first find out if there are other cable providers in your area that offer cable for less money. If so, why not just switch?

Also, it is usually cheaper if you bundle the cable, internet and phone all together. In addition, digital cable is usually cheaper than regular cable when you have more than one cable box.

you can bundle with your phone company and get a better rate. We have our phone, internet and cable bundled and we get it for 100 a month. We have high speed internet and long distance and alot of channels including movie channels. We had to sign a 2 year aggrement though. We were with comcast and it was very expensive.

Yes I do bcuz I work in that department!!! :) Here's what you do...
Call and tell them that you're very dissatisfied with the price and tell them that you're thinking of going to another carrier. Ad long as you don't have a past due balance they'll give you a deal.
