I have always been a Peter Gabriel fan, and was surprised to find out that not many people realize he was with Genesis before going solo. I'd have to say I'm a bigger Gabriel fan than I am a Collins fan, but I do like Phil's stuff. By the way, Brodie Bruce spurred this idea with his Phil Collins/Genesis favorite song.

The Gabriel-era Genesis and the post-Gabriel Genesis are really two unrelated, separate and different bands. With Gabriel's departure, they lost all lyrical wit, intelligence, substance and depth; all eloquence was gone, the art was abandoned for cheesy, commercial and cheap love songs. I was really glad when Hackett left them to play serious music, quite a natural move. The Collins-era pla shadow of Genesis had a few moments of wit, too - Land of Confusion and Jesus He Knows Me come to mind - but even those were dated and shallow, if humorous. But I see that Gabriel benefited so much by losing the band, his music went into a totally different and revolutionary direction, so it all worked out for the best.

Favorite Gabriel song probably The Rhythm of the Heat from security (the remastered edition sounds outstanding), actually the whole security album is an "alien" record. On Genesis with gabriel I will probably choose something from selling england by the pound, maybe Firth of fifth or Cinema show (with bill brufird on drums!)... Phil Collins is a great drummer and a good singer, Peter Gabriel is a musician, extraordinary vocalist and a "brain", creative, innovative, simply a master on music... I personally prefer Gabriel all the way. Besides I am not a big fan of the Collins pop oriented music, sounds good but not impressive.

I am a bigger fan of Peter Gabriel. The stuff Genesis did with Peter as front man in my opinion is way better than anything done with Phil in front. With the exception of "A trick of the tail" nothing that was done after Peter left even comes close to being Genesis. I do have to say that Brand X was a great project for Collins, but he has never came close to the quality of Peter Gabriel.

I might desire to bypass with Phil Collins, yet purely simply by fact i'm purely 35 and that i've got heard lots extra Collins-era Genesis than Gabriel-era. i understand a large type of folk say he replaced the band and made them "pop" yet once you hear to lots of their stuff, even later stuff like "residing perpetually" and "Fading lights", there replaced into definitely complexity, stuff that definitely musicians might savour... no longer purely ear candy.

Salsbury Hill....."my heart going boom boom boom"

I really didn't listen to Genesis much when Peter Gabriel was singing with them.. He has had an awesome solo career.

I saw them from the 9th row in concert once. "No Reply" would have to be my favorite song.
