Fess up, and tell them you lost it. Don't tell them what your grandma told you; she's just being a grandma, don't burn your bridges with her. Just tell them you lost it, were wanting to take care of the problem by finding it on your own, but didn't and now you are coming to them for help. That's really your only chance of getting it back.
