Carnival originated in Trinidad, in the southern Caribbean back in the days of slavery. It has several aspects to it. Back then there were a lot of plantations with slaves owned by French planters, and the major religion in Trinidad was Roman Catholic. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent in the Roman Catholic faith. During Lent a lot of people fast or give up certain indulgences, the most popular fast being a fast from meat. The actual word "Carnival" comes from the French patois meaning "farewell to meat".

So during the days before Lent there would be a lot of parties because, basically, there wasn't going to be any fun for the next forty days of Lent. Even the slaves were allowed to socialize and have some fun. While the French high society were inside having their gatherings, the slaves would basically have a street party and they would dress up in "costume" imitating and making fun of the French planters and their high society. It was a sort of passive rebellion and stress relief.

Eventually this branched out into more elaborate costumes and storytelling. The tradition of having a major street party in the days before Lent holds to this day and Carnival is going on right now in Trinidad (oh how I would love to be there!). People wear the most elaborate, colorful costumes and basically party for several days straight. Many other countries have taken the influence of Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival and made their own versions in their own countries. These include, London's Carnival, New York's Labor Day celebrations, Brazillian Carnival, Miami Carnival and many others. Often Trinidad and Tobago's Artists (music and costume) are invited and are integral in many of the other Carnivals around the world simply because Trinbagonians are the authority on all that is Carnival.

The Carnival Season is a holiday period during the two weeks before the traditional Christian fasting of Lent.
The origin of rituals like carnival goes back to Dionysus and Dionysia.
The origin of the name "Carnival" is unclear.
The most common theory is that the name comes from the Italian carne- or carnovale, from Latin carnem (meat) + levare (lighten or raise), literally "to remove the meat" or "stop eating meat".
