They fired him fo supposedly not performing in the playoffs.
They indeed are stupid. Look at the colts.. it took them YEARS to get to the SB and when they did, they won. They were exactly like the chargers.
Bad decision SD.... bad decision.

Let's not forget that Norv Turner's failures as an NFL head coach have come with the Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders. Dysfunctional and dysfunctionaler.
A letter of recommendation from Troy Aikman goes a long way. Not to mention the job he's done with Alex Smith in San Francisco. The Chargers are loaded on defense and they have LT running the ball. What they need is someone who can come in and help Phillip Rivers take his game to the next level and A.J. Smith apparently thinks Norv is the guy.
It may or may not turn out well, but Smith has done a fine job so far. He's a old Bill Polian disciple and should be given the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Trust me I don't get it either. I know he sucks in the playoffs but unless there is a better option out there (which there wasn't - especially AFTER all the coaches had already been hired by other teams), then why get rid of him? Bide your time until someone better comes along.
The only justification I can think of is that this is the best the Chargers were going to be with Marty at the helm and that it was worth taking the risk to see if someone could bring them to that last step.

Unfortunately his history in the playoffs got him terminated. I don't think that it was a wise decision. You see this type of thing almost every year in the playoffs, where the team that the majority believes to be the "better" loses.
Either way, I do not think that Turner is the answer. The move definitely should have been done immediately after the season ended for them, allowing them to choose from every possible applicant. Charger Management is the one that looks foolish right now, but the true judge will be next seasons performance.

The owner screwed the pooch on this one. No class at all. To fire a coach after going 14-2 with a QB in his first year was stupid. They first screwed up by drafting Rivers when they already had Brees. They should have used that pick in a different way for sure. I think it would be hard to be a coach for that franchise after this last F up. Maybe someone desperate for their first head coaching job will take it.

The Chargers were definitely the best team going into the playoffs, but they did not play that way. Some of the blame should go to the players, who made several mental mistakes and the rest to the coaches for their play calling.

well im not sure yet. hiring norv turner seems to be what chargers fans dont want to happen. its bad for both the 9ers and chargers. turner has never been a good HC (see oakland and redskins). but then again he never had LT, Gates, Rivers, and Merriman either. so we will see. but most chargers fans want rex ryan.

the chargers loss in the playoffs had nothing to do with marty...did he make one or two questionable decisions yes, but if mccree just KNOCKS THE BALL DOWN on fourth down instead of intercepting it and fumbling it back to new england, the chargers would have won that game and possibly one or two more

because they one with talent not with the coach. I knew at the beginning of the playoffs that they would lose because of ol marty. They needed a new coach, now lets hope they pick an innovatve coah and not a retread like marty.

I think they were stupid to let marty go despite his playoff record, but they were smart to hire Ron Rivera away from the Bears as his D-coordinator. Hopefully, this won't be a terrible regime change.
