The both have oil and they both are mostly Shia and they both are on the Bush/Cheney hit list. When Bush Sr. was VP, he supported arming Saddam so that he would oppose and attack Iran. At that time the two nations fought each other. Now that Saddam has been removed, and the Shia are not being repressed by Saddams ruling minority Sunnis, they are in the majority, and the likelihood that they would ally themselves with Iran goes up. Bush/Cheney don't like that possiblility so they have even more reason to demonize Iran when they help their fellow tribesmen, blaming Iran for American soldiers deaths, when actually more than 90% of our soldiers die at the hands of the Sunnis, who we now oppose, and they get their money and weapons from the Saudis via Jordan. Quite a convoluted mess, wouldn't you say?

Complicated question.

They are for the most part, enemies. Iran and Iraq were at war for a good many of years that ended in the 80s. Iraq was the aggressor btw.

Now, Iran supports the Sunnis... the Shiites (Shia -however you want to spell it) respresent the Baath party that supported Iraq invading Iran.

So you see, the relationship between Iran and Iraq really comes down to who ends up with ultimate power and control in Iraq - the Shia or the Sunni.

They are enemies. Have been for centuries.
There is a different ideology between Sunni Muslims(Iraq) and Shiite Muslims(Iran).
Sunni Muslims believe there should be a separation between religion and state.
Shiite Muslims believe the religion should be the state.
These two ideologies clash just like liberals and conservatives do in the USA.

Iran is a Shi'a state. So they like the Shi'a in Iraq, and hate the Sunnis in Iraq. So really, if the Shi'a took over control of Iraq, they would be allies, and if the Sunni took over control, they would be enemies. But the way it stands now, they don't really support or hinder Iraq, other then supporting Shi'a militias.

Iran likes the "new" Iraq. It is free of Saddam; therefore, they can now get inside of Iraq and do as they please. We see their work every day, in the news, when things blow up and people die.

Unfortunately that's not a simple answer - some people have posted good answers, but there are so many different aspects to the conflict in the middle east that you can't refer to it in black and white terms.

(Which is why every attempt to do so, and basing US middle east policy on oversimplistic platitudes have been complete failures).
