I live out in the Country and there is a horse trail riding business right a cross from me,so I can see everything.
I have just noticed that one of the mares ( who is fully pregnant) is being used as riding horse.
I think that you would have to be a total SAVAGE to ride the poor thing!
......A safe guess is that this savage who is sitting on her is at least over 150 lbs or 69kg or 10.7stone .....Very disturbing.
Does anyone know if this is common, normal stuff and not unusual?
And if this is totally unacceptable should i call the cops ???????.

I am fortunate that I live in a state where it is a felony to abuse poor innocent animals.

I don't want to make enemies with the neighbours...what should I do?

Feel no mercy for the neibor. Call your local ranger or police dept. and tell exacly what you've seen. I'm not sure if it's a law, but if that animal is pregnant enough, the horse can be saved- and the owner fined. Your neibor may not know what he's doing, either. Best to be safe than sorry.

It does sound unusual to me...

It is common to ride a pregnant mare as long as the mare is used to being ridden and is in good condition and health. A mare can be worked up to the time of delivery and shortly thereafter as long as her health is good. Trail businesses typically do not have strenuous rides and don't stress the horses that they use. The gentle walk of a trail ride is better for the mare than having her stand still all day.

I raise horses and have for many years. I ride my mare until the saddle doesn't fit. The only change I make is that I don't make her climb hills or run. We both enjoy our leisurely walks and she has foaled a healthy foal every year with out issue.

Please, if you are still concerned talked with a vet. Do not go by what you are reading by several of your posters. They OBVIOUSLY have never owned a pregnant mare. Riding her will NOT cause the mare to slip the colt unless the mare is in poor health or condition or is ridden excessively hard i.e. barrel racing, trail racing or the such. It takes major trauma or illness to cause a mare to abort late term. I applaud your concern and wish more people were like you since I see so many abused and neglected horses but this time your concern is misplaced.

Many times owner/people extend the use of a horse for there own pleasure or work needs (as in a farm). And, when a horse, because the animal is so big, gets sick, it can be very costly to its owner. A smart owner would want to keep the cost of owning a horse to a minimum.

I have owned and trained my racehorse and won the NJ Knickerbocker. A horse needs to be kept moving in all sorts of weather due to the nature of the animals body composition. Unless the weather is cold and there is ice on the ground that would endanger the horse's footing, it may be very beneficial to keep the horse going. During the cold and wintry months, owners worry much about colic.

If the owner gives his horse shots when the shots are due and you notice the veterinarian visit the animal from time to time, I would not worry too much. It is the abandoned horse that needs to be looked after, not the horse that is owned by anyone.

Its safe to ride a pregnant mare up to a certain point. Once she's 3 months from foaling, though, its time to let her rest, she's carrying enough weight.

Are you sure she's pregnant? Have you asked the owner? Why don't you just ask nicely how far along she is, then you can base the answer on whether or not its abuse.

Also: Someone once asked me when my horse was going to foal. I was riding my then 8 year old gelding. I answered politely, never. He's just fat.

I have a mare in my pasture right now that is simply fat, but my friends tease me by asking me when she's due.

Please make sure of your facts before you alienate your neighbor.

i'd say research it and get some facts behind you. Then approach the owner and ask if she is indeed pregnant. List some reasons about why she shouldn't be ridden, but don't be to accusing or forward. If he continues to ride her, and you found that it's unsafe. Or call authorities to investigate cause it might be obvious if you ask him and he refuses, then animal police show up. Good job keepiong an eye for the animals

We suggest that you call Animal Control to find out what exactly they consider abuse in a case such as this. If the the mare is otherwise healthy, riding her may not be an issue until she's further along in her pregnancy.

Call your ASPCA right away, the horse could lose it colt and then the owner would be charged with murdering a colt. By call it in you could save the baby and its mother. He may not be aware of the damage he is causing allowing someone that large on the mare. Or he could be just plain stupid.

If you have a Animal Control Center notify them or the police they can help also.
Good Luck.

If i was you I would call my nearest animal control/humane soiciety and get advice, they will have the best information that you need. If it is indeed animal abuse they will take full action, and remove the horse to safety.
Im not familiar with horses so this is the best advice i could give you.
Good luck
