1. Imagine you have a seismic sensor. The sensor will tell you that an eruption has occurred, how far away remains a mystery.
2. Let’s use two sensors placed a known distance apart. Now if we detect the difference in arrival of the signals we can compute the angle of seismic wave arrival and by knowing the distance between the sensors we can compute the distance to the source. There is a problem since it could be to the left or to the right.
3. To solve this problem we install a third sensor. The third sensor will provide the necessary information to pinpoint the center of eruption.
