is there a way to remove or minimize the damage caused by banging a shovel on the ice that froze on the pavers?

use a plastic shovel and Icemelt. also when the weather warms, make sure you seal the pavers with a good tile grout sealer, this will prevent the ice from cracking your pavers up and making it a lot longer before you have to replace them. as for marks that may already be there? you can sand then out by rubbing another paver on the scratched paver then washing the dust away. it'll take a short while to become un noticable again.

yeah - don't do it. use salt or other ice melters to rid yourself of the ice. Alternately if you absolutely have to hack away at it aim the shovel or ice scrapper to impact over a joint between the stones as opposed to right in the middle of a brick.
