It all depends on how you connect to the internet. If you have cable internet and a wireless router connection, the Wii will automatically find it. If you have a non-wireless router, you can connect to the Wii to the router using a Wii lan converter that connects to the USB port of the Wii. If you connect your computer directly to the internet through cable, dsl, or dial-up, then you can buy a Wii wireless device that slides into your computer's USB port and communicates with the Wii wirelessly.
If you have dial-up or dsl, you'll have to have the connection turned on regardless for the Wii to see the internet connection.

to get on the internet, you need a router or something u plug into ur computer that can send internet access out. ur internet does need to be on. but u will need to install a router first or the thing that plugs into your computer.

If you have cable internet, then its always "on". You just need to be connected to the router or modem.
