By writing mostly. This is the part most people forget about, strangely enough. They all ask what school you have to go to, who you have to know, how you find publishers, etc..., etc..., but very few people seem to be interested in actually writing.
The trick is to keep at it. Perseverance (Some may call it obstinacy) is the most important trait. You should write, if not every day, pretty near to it. It will put writing in your life. Re-read your material. Correct it. Find out what it is you really want to talk about. Once you have a project that's well under way, you may want to start looking for editors and the like, but before that, concentrate on the writing. You'll have an advantage over a great many people who can't be bothered.

The first step is writing. If you can't force yourself to sit down and do it, forget it. You'll never be an author.

When you have a book well started, start hanging out with other more experienced writers and pick their brains. Most successful writers are actually willing to help new writers so long as the new writers take the advice somewhat seriously.

One writers chat you might check out is "The Write Stuff" on www.burryman.com. It starts at 10:30 ET on Friday nights and is followed by "Late Edition," a chat for professional writers.

First you have to be mentally tough enough to accept the rejections. Once you can handle the word "NO" you are ready to submit whatever you have written.
