A very subjective question. There is no "in between". The saddle shape (a negatively curved space) is just an example of non-Euclidean geometry. normal Euclidean geometry occurs on a flat plane, whereas non-Euclidean can occur in many different forms, only one of which is negatively curved space.

SO, onto an answer...Think of a drinking straw in your hand. its a cylindrical shape, you can look inside it and all sorts of things. there are several different ways to travel along that straw. Now imagine an ant crawling along the inside of the straw, what does he see? Does the ant crawling on the inside have any clue what is on the outside of the straw? Of course not, in no way can he see the outside of the straw. and vice verse, if the ant were on the outside, would he have any idea of what was inside? And now, put the straw down on a table, and walk 100 feet away from it. Now look at it. I bet you cant tell that its a cylinder anymore, but now only looks like a one-dimensional line from far away, and it only looks like there is one way to move along it. This is a long-winded but relevant analogy.

So think of it like this....We live on the surface of that saddle, right? But think of it as we are living on the inside surface looking in, not on the outside surface looking out. We would have no clue what resides outside of the saddle (our universe) because we cant see beyond the boundaries of the saddle. I know its alot of buildup for a not very informative answer, but I'm trying to explain how you'll NEVER get an informative answer on this :)

hope this helps :)

on a side note, chocolate sponge cake is my pick too. From a sheer probabilities standpoint, there will be a universe filled with chocolate spongecake somewhere in the 10^500 (10 with 500 zeros after it) possible universes...This answer is no less valid that anyone elses, once again illustrating the point that you will NEVER get an informative answer on this!

If we knew that we would know what existed before the universe came into existence and maybe why the universe is here. We know nothing about anything outside of the universe if there even is anything.

But if I had to guess I would say chocolate sponge cake.
