At night I would be careful wherever lighting is poor and not a lot of people walking around.

I recall recently walking alone on a dark street near city hall after a late meeting. I approached an alley with some homeless people in the doorway and I felt apprehensive even though they weren't doing anything but minding their own business.

Many alleyways and narrow streets in Chinatown. We stopped going to Chinatown at night since that time we were scared out of our wits by some youths who walked into the restaurant as if they owned it and sat in the back facing the door without ordering anything. The workers were trading knowing glances but no one approached the two at the back. About 40 yrs ago when the oldtimers owned the chinese businesses, they used to stay open at night. Now the shops are operated by the next generation and they close at night and only some restaurants are open.in Chinatown those hours.

Anyone should be alert and try not to walk alone at night in the city because in certain neighborhoods a totally different population and life takes over after dark.

Any alley has the potential to be scary. However, being a native of San Francisco, I don't really feel too threatened about it. Just keep in mind that no matter what city/state you are in, you should always stay aware of your surroundings and pay attention.

We have alley's on all our city blocks. I guess it would depend on which area of the city you were walking. In mine no, on the north side hell yes!
