There is not enough matter in the universe to stop the expansion of space. In the end, all galaxies will merge if their gravity draws them together. Then all the remaining galaxies will move away from each other as space expands until, if we are still around, there would be no more galaxies to see other than our own.

Also, trillions of years from now, all the objects in the universe will cool off until any heat left is close to absolute zero and is the same everywhere. The stars will cool down to the average temperature of the universe which will be close to absolute zero when that happens.

Work is caused by differences in temperature between areas allowing energy to flow from one place to another. When there is no difference in temperature between one place and another it is impossible to get work out of a system. This is called the "heat death" of the universe.

Thus, in the end, trillions and trillions of years from now, it will be a dark cold universe expanding forever. Hopefully, if it is true that there are other universes and, of course, if we are still around, perhaps we can find a way to get ourselves to another universe.
