True, but not all stereotypes are bad. Consider how stereotypes come about. Often people are characterized a certain way because many members of the group have one characteristic/belief/behavior in common. It's easy to say, for example, that Asians are smart, since they have such high math scores. We believe this because we see evidence (the math scores, the success they have in business, etc.) that many Asians are in fact intelligent, although it doesn't necessarily mean that they all are. Think of how the world would be if we couldn't use labels. How would history classes be taught? "Some ancient Egyptians may have been hardworking because the pyramids they built may be construed as great works of art; but that is just some people's opinions."

I don't think we can function without generalizing a little bit; we just have to be aware that every person is different, and what seems to be characteristic of the majority may not always be so.

Labeling people, especially at a young age, will inadvertantly cause a person to begin living-the-label......for example, if a child is labeled a 'juvenile delinquent' for stealing a pack of gum and henceforth is judged on every little action....he might just assume the role of a good for nothing kid and continue to fill that role.....you're absolutely right.....they are stupid

i have continually hated them. regrettably, some stereotypes relating particular communities of persons have some (no longer as in anybody in the crew is exactly like that, yet that some people are and resources it a nasty call) reality. I fairly don't understand what i'd be labeled as, i'd say weirdo lol.

They can be degrading and untrue but we all prone to doing it. Whether it is a teenage mother or a youth that is on the street late at night with his hood up. We jump to conclusions, but most of the time it seems to be a safety mechanism. We will not approach someone who appears to be a mugger, they may be angelic but are we really going to take that chance?

I think they are not right because it not only can start big problems, but it makes the person whoe makes stereotypes look crazy. And you are right, they are not only degrading to the people they are about, but they show lack of character in the person saying them.
