For spectacles to be sold via a shop in the UK does there have to be a registered Dispensing optician present. I know the law has been relaxed somewhat but cant find the exact info on the legality of the sale of specs. As far as i know you have to be atleast a dispensing optician to sell to under 16`s, but what about everyone else. Any info on this subject would be a great help

If you have a current prescription issued by an optician can you use this to purchase prescription glasses from someone who isnt a registered dispenser who gets the glasses made up by a prescription house

The Opticians Act 1989 as amended states, among other things, that anyone may sell corrective spectacles as long as they have an original, in-date prescription issued by a qualified optician, provided that

- the purchaser isn't registered as blind or partially sighted
- the seller provides aftercare

No prescription is necessary for single-vision lenses of power zero to +4 dioptres.

You can buy reading glasses anywhere now.You must either have a prescription or an eyetest by a dispensing opticain to buy specs.needed to compensate for defective eyesight.
