I personally didn't think they were so cool back then. Most of the popular kids were so stuck on themselves, and truly believed they were better than others. An illusion only they and their friends believed. It must of been hard for them when they fell off the pedestal and came slamming back to earth, which was bound to happen when they left high school, and entered the real world.

Peaking in high school is not pretty. Personally I have not kept in touch with people from my school but I went to my wife's 20 year high school reunion recently and she pointed out to me the "cool kids." Some were still hip and cool but some were not. Overall I'd say more were not but it's kind of hit or miss.

I used to see him all the time and he is still as fine as he was in high school. But come to find out, I was one of the popular kids in school. Wish someone would have told me.

It depends on what kind of school you go to. At one high school I went to all kids who were popular are dead or in jail. At another I know a couple of them became pretty successful. (but this was a weird school where being smart and educated made you more popular)

When I was in college I bumped into the popular kid from HS when he was collecting carts at the gorcery store.
What may seem cool in HS sometimes doesn't translate to cool once you're older.

Awesome question.
I was a "hood" as we called them 12 years ago and I was always in trouble, always getting in fights, doing drugs, and doing all the stuff that one shouldn't. the "preps" had their leader who was all star baseball, basketball and football. he wore all the right clothes, had the brand new car at 16. I seen him about two months ago. I pulled up in my brand new jeep, pumped my gas, and went in and paid...him. working at a gas station at 29 years old. I not only reminded him how he made fun of my parents who worked menial jobs, I also rubbed it in his face that he grew up to be a gas station attendant. Life works out nice sometimes.
In school I wasn't "cool" by any stretch, I was 6'4" and 135lbs, wore glasses and coudlnt afford nice clothes. Now, my wifes a nurse, I'm in IT and we make enough to do what we want. I'm 6'4" and 200lbs, most of those "cool" girls who wouldn't give me the time of day would drool over me now.

I remember back in the 1980's when I was a freshman in high school. I had left for my sophomore and junior years to temporarily go to another school, and came back for my senior year in 1988. The most popular kid there was probably John, and yes, he was still pretty popular. :)

let me quote one of my favorite movies, NEVER BEEN KISSED starring Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan.
"I have been beating my brains in trying to impress you people. Listen Gibby, Kirstin, Krysten, you will spend your whole lives trying to keep others down because it makes you feel more important, but why her? Let me tell you about this girl she is amazing. I was new here and she befriended me no questions asked. But you, you were only my friends after my brother, Rob , told you to like me. There is a great big world out there and it won't matter if you were the most popular girl, the quarterback of the football team, or the biggest nerd in school. Find out who you are and try not to be afraid of it."

Hardly ever. The world changes when they leave school and they have to find a new way of getting what they want. The guys that thought they were so hard? Looser druggies, wouldn't touch them with a bargepole..xx
