That question is best answered by the person or group using either name since different people can mean different things.

In General, a choreographer is the person who designs the dance and it's steps. Often s/he is the one who is also responsible for teaching the dances to the cast.

A Dance Captain, is a person who is in charge of dance rehersals and making sure the dances are done correctly, often in the absence of the choreographer.

A Dance Director usually means the person in the administration of an organization who is in charge of the "dance" aspect of the program. Some dance groups use "dance director" instead of "artistic director" for their troupe.

It's also used as a title in film making, often for the person who does all of the above.

But, as I said, in the arts people can mean different things even when they use the same phrase... so go ahead and ask at the place you heard the term.

I think I'd call her the Technical Director. In my mind, the Artistic Director will sometimes be a Choreographer but is responsible for the big picture ... choosing a season, for example. The Choreographer is responsible for an individual piece.

It's like the difference between a playwright and a stage director. The choreographer has the vision and the dance director makes it reality.
