I have a friend who works at a wine bar as a server and a group of people at one table walked out without paying their bill. Her employer says she has to pay their bill. Is this legal? Is there anything she can do besides quit? Or even if she does quit is there some legal action she can persue? If you can, please provide a link to a site that would deal with these types of laws. We reside in Washington state. Thanks!

No, it is not legal. Time to move on to another job. Why would she want to work for a jerk like that?

No, it is not legal. Sounds as if the boss wants to make the employee make up the difference for the tab. His bar should be set up where they have to pay for the drinks when they receive them. By paying for each round of drinks as they are served, then there is no problem. The best thing to do is...quit, and find a lawyer.

it is not in easy terms unlawful in Illinois, it is unlawful everywhere. As your employer, your boss positioned you in the situation of waiting on tables the place human beings could walk out. they are in a position to't legally try this and make you pay by using fact THEIR clientele are deadbeats. If the situation is done consistently and the employer makes a million money, do you get a cut back besides on your wages? No. the solid stuff belongs to the proprietors. that's area of the deal. area of the deal is likewise in case you very own a employer the place clientele walk out now and lower back, you do no longer make the human beings who you employed to artwork for you pay the invoice. verify with the IL branch of exertions and that they are going to show you how to already know the precise statute. Your boss is a creep. Sorry to break it to you.

airtom...that's is just ridiculous!! You cannot make a party pay for each round these days. Everyone uses plastic and no one would go to a bar or restaurant that didn't allow you to "run a tab".

I would tell her to call a lawyer. That sounds really fishy to me, and I don't think it sounds legal. However, I am not a lawyer and don't know. It may also depend on what she signed when she was hired, and the published policies and procedures of her place of employment.
