Turbos, definitely. The cars were much more unreliable and you could get freak results. Five drivers won for 3 teams last season and it was one of the more exciting ones of recent times...11 drivers won with 7 teams in 1982, as the quickest cars (the Brabham BMWs) hardly ever finished.

Bring back the slicks, as someone else mentioned. Grooved tires reduced mechanical grip and narrowed the racing lines. Less tire surface reduced passing, it didn't increase it, and it made F1 LESS safe. The "argument" for grooved tires was the same as less downforce was in CART, it would "make the drivers slow down"; ask Greg Moore what less downforce and grip will do - oh wait, you can't, because he's *dead*, due of course to reduced grip and downforce.

As for other technology, things need to be _removed_ from F1, not added. Computers should only be allowed to collect data, not modify the car during the race. For example, give the driver in-car controls to change brake bias and such, but the _driver_ has to decide how much; it becomes a matter of skill, not technology, just like paddle shifting keeps the task in the driver's hands.

And go back to 2 litre V6 engines. Less capacity means less speed and increased safety. It does NOT reduce technological development. If you disagree, think of a building: limiting the length and depth of the ground floor area doesn't limit how tall it can be; your choice of materials and engineering skills limit the height. (Or in a car, reduced block size doesn't limit materials or the RPMs of an engine.)

I'd rather see new technology without much restrictions. The turbo era was pretty cool and slick tires would be nice as well; even the active suspension was neat, especially when the cars would leave the little spark trails. But I would like to see less aero add-ons like barge boards and the such. Anything to keep the cars clean looking and sleek. If anything though, less restrictions on the engines and engine sizes. I like to hear and feel a race car when it passes. Something your surround sound can appreciate too!

Three big things: slick tires, turbos along with 1.5 liter 4-cylinder engines and maybe ground effects (but with the current ground clearance, in order to prevent the cars from bottoming and losing downforce). I'd still disallow software that prevents turbo lag and give the teams three types of turbos to choose from, each configured for three different types of tracks (low-speed, like Monaco, medium-speed and high-speed, like Monza or the old Hockenheim).

Oh, and I'd destroy the modifications done by Tilke to Hockenheim.

Mass dampers. That was the most inspired clever thing that designers have come up with in several years and they could have real world applications in road cars and other forms of transport. In today's over-regulated world of motorsport we don't see the kind of innovation that existed in the days of Colin Chapman and Jim Hall.

I would have to say the thing that I would like to have back is active suspension and V-10 back. I feel that F1 should be the pinnacle of motorsports and that innovative ideas should not be hampered.
