when I first bought my laptop I went through and tweaked all my settings and I remember one that said something like "dim monitor when on battery power" and I checked it thinking it was a good way to conserve battery power. But something is funky with it and now it dims when it's on AC power, which is not only inefficient, but quite annoying. I've gone searching for this setting again and I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help? I have an Inspiron E1500 with Windows XP, it's about a year old.

inclusive -- where/what is bios? I did a search and I got a text document with some URLs and a bunch of
BadBIOSVersion=AXX

thanks for everyone's answers, but I've tried all that can't find it anywhere... I've restored everything I could to default and even done a system restore... nothing works.

There is an option in the BIOS that lets you control the brightness for battery and AC power. But I dont believe that will solve your issue. Do you have a monitor (not the laptop lcd) that you can plug into your system? If so use the VGA cable ( blue ended) and connect the monitor to your Insp. While in windows press the Fn key and the F2 key and the video should swapo from your lcd to the monitor. Now you can see if the lcd is dim and the monitor are dim. If the monitor brightness is normal and the lcd is dim you need to call Dell support and get a tech to come out and replace your laptop lcd.
To get into the BIOS to change those settings you have reboot your system. When the Dell logo appears start pressing the F2 key ( should only need to press it once or twice) and you should see a screen that is blue with System Setup on the screen. in the power options you'll find the brightness controls for AC power and battery power.
I work for Dell Tech support so if you have difficulties let me know and I'll be more than willing to help you. (seems Dells rep for helpfulness is tarnished :) )

i own a dell inspiron 1545, and that i used to have the comparable difficulty. There are 2 suggestions: one million. close down ur equipment and turn on lower back(dont restart!). with a bit of luck the brightness would be adjustable. 2. If ur equipment is plugged into AC means grant using the adapter, unplug it. substitute the means option to 'severe overall performance' and plug the adapter lower back then set even though battery overall performance point u choose. After u've re-plugged u'll be waiting to modify the brightness using Fn+arrow keys.

Right-click on your desktop and select Properties, then Screen saver.
In the screen saver tab, there is an option for 'Monitor Power'. Click on the Power button and look at your power saver settings.

I don't know about your laptop, but a similar option for mine exists in
BIOS. If it isn't in BIOS, and its not found in Advanced Display Settings (found by right-clicking on the desktop and clicking the Advanced button), then I'm not sure where it would be.
