Suggestions I DON'T want:
baskets full of products--this is a common gift
gift certificate for cleaning service--she already uses a cleaning service
gift certificate for night out--this is a common gift
gift certificate for babysitting--this is a common gift, and she has several family members nearby that are clamoring to babysit
Diaper cakes or wreaths--I think they're overdone, and it's becoming a common gift
Gift certificate to portrait studio--her dad is a photographer
Gift certificate to a spa--she doesn't enjoy things like that

I want to do something for her that's VERY unique, preferably even homemade.

Relevant info:
She is having a girl, but isn't announcing the name until the baby is born. She is 28, her husband is 29, and this is their first baby, and also the first grandchild on both sides. He is a pilot and she's an air traffic controller, but it's hard to find gift ideas that correlate with that that are not obviously for boys.

Have you tried looking at belly casting. What it is, is making a plaster mold of the mother belly. The plastering is something that can be done between the mother and father in a private setting. Or it can be done at the baby shower with group of the mother friends. It's up to her. Doing the casting does not take a long time to complete.

After the cast is complete is can be fiberglassed and decorated. Depending if you get the kit before the shower you can plaster the mothers belly, then have the belly fiberglassed and the guest of the shower can decorated at the shower. That would be great gift for the mother. I got a belly cast for one of my girlfriends and her husband. The company I got my kit and fiberglassing from is Original Belly Works. The site is www.originalbellyworks.com

I hope you find a great gift for the shower.

Okay i got three homemade gifts that I loved at my babyshower. The first was a knitted blanket
the second was a quilted photo album that someone made and put a dollar in with writing that said if the dollar was taken that I had to replace it with a new $1 and a $100. But the cover had a frame for the babys first picture (which was sort of sticking up)
The third and perhaps the most memorable was a pillow that had a place for the name, weight, height, time and date of birth. Then using puff paint everyone who attended my shower signed the pillow.

A suggestion that I had was Baby bottles filled with diaper pins (useful for keeping socks together), little hair bands, and small things people usually forget.

Another thing would be something for the mother like calgon and maybe a homemade candle to enjoy a nice bath and then maybe some lavendar wash for the baby.

I am making my best friend a scrapbook with 52 pages, one for each day of the year. Each will have a spot for one photo and journaling about that week of the baby's life.

Also, when I give shower gifts, I buy a clean empty paint can (you can purchase these at Lowe's) and cover it with wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, or fabric. I decorate it with my scrapbooking supplies and put the gift inside. The paint can can be used for keepsakes, and it's always a hit at baby showers.

I like to buy books- but not baby books. I once bought a boxed set of the Chronicles of Narnia, for example. I think that there are some classic children's books that every single child should own, and giving these as a shower gift is really unique.

take clothing from a past family member that has passed away ( a family member that really meant something and that was close) and out of many shirts, gowns, pants etc, make a quilt, it will keep memories forever. My grandmother died, and my little cousin was borned, my mom did that for her, and the whole family loved it.

I dont know about any gift ideas, but at my sons baby shower, my mother-in-law had an idea for a game to play. You take various candy bars, and melt them into diapers, and everyone has to guess which diaper contains what candy bar. The have tons of pictures of them all doing this, and they tell me that it was fun.

Make something yourself. A personalized baby book, scrapbook, blanket, booties, outfit, etc. You kinda killed all the good baby-shower gifts, so all you have left is to make something yourself.
