Hi, I am 14 years old, and I am good at computer programming and web design. I wanted to be a programmer or web designer when I grew up until about 3 minutes ago, I looked at some of the salaries they get, and it shocked me, now I am just not sure if I want to do it for so little money, they were getting around £25,000 at most! I love doing the stuff, but I want a family when I am older, and I want a good life like my parents have now, are these the real salaries? How hard is it to get a good paying job? If I need a portfolio, how can I get one at this age? Little help please?

25,000 pounds is how many dollars? It's less than $25,000, right? That doesn't seem accurate, the average baselines salary is between $30 and $40,000. Easily enough to raise a family, but more than likely you will earn more (especially if you are starting at 14).

Since you are younger, you need some proof of concept and a good portfolio should include several programs you write. Try to write apps that target the market you are trying to get into (like business apps for the business market).

You're only 14, that's when I started, you still have plenty of time to get ahead when you go to college. You'll be surprised that most people in college will start looking at this stuff for the first time when they take the class, surely you will do better than them (I did).

50% of the programmers who work for Microsoft are millionaires....this is a FACT !
No one will pay you just for being a programmer. If you are very good, stand out from the rest, show creativity & ingenuity .... you can earn more money than most doctors.

Don't be discouraged ... those salaries you saw are standard for average Joe's who do menial tasks. It's really up to you & how hard you work at it.

best of luck !

Like any job you need to just get in anywhere you can at any wage and work your way up from there. You may start at £25k at the age of 18, but within just a few years (IF YOU ARE ANY GOOD), you could earn a hell of a lot more. BUT you do need to prove yourself first.

Experience counts for just as much as training.
