William Easterly's "Elusive Quest for Growth" deals with this very topic.
Fantastic book.
Additionally, if you run a google search for his name, you'll find a variety of shorter articles that he's written that may help.

If you are talking about the world The UN and world bank have many studies on causes and solutions to poverty. Controlling the birth rate and improving health are always high on the list. see some data at http://www.wider.unu.edu/research/2006-2007/2006-2007-1/wider-wdhw-launch-5-12-2006/wider-wdhw-press-release-5-12-2006.htm
Even in the US a significant fraction of the people who fall into poverty do so because because of ill health, both mental and physical. The number of people actually living in poverty is the US is smaller than the income statistics indicate because many are getting help from the government or family and some have savings.

Sorry man, education (dont just saying more schools, meaning transfer knowledge to other people about a lot of subjects, including sex education, production-for agriculture, good nutricion, etc) is THE way, the most important of all, without education you cant get out of poverty. People that says it isnt i think they are wrong(half wrong, cuz the most important is education) and if u want i could explain to u why education is the ONLY (well, the most important) answer to poverty.
Here is a book that shows all the aspects you need to fight poverty (get a good nutrition, better wages, and of course...EDUCATION)
Reduction of absolute poverty: a priority structural adjustment
Autor: Green, Reginald Herbold

Depends on what you mean -- do you refer to individual poverty in a prosperous country, or are you talking about widespread poverty in a 3rd world country?
In the 3rd world, education can be much overrated. foreign investment is more important -- successful global companies can come in figure out how to make uneducated locals productive in factories, etc. (Analogy: think how McDonald's uses idiot-proof cash registers so that even near-illiterate dumb people can accurately take orders and give correct change.)

Poverty is cured by job creation.
Education is not needed to clean toilets, pick vegetables, or even answer the phone. Education is in fact a LUXURY rather than a necessity.

It is most certainly not. All you have to do is look up the statictics for people who have degrees and are still working for poverty level wages.
I went to university so I could learn to say "Would you like fries with that?" is a joke that wouldn't be funny if it wasn't so true.

You might really stir the pot with this and offend people, but...
Illegitimacy Rates:
Black ~ 68%
Hispanic ~ 45%
White ~ 24%
Asian ~ 15%
Median Household Income:
Asian ~ $61,000
White ~ $51,000
Hispanic ~ $36,000
Black ~ $31,000
It does not take an expensive degree to reproduce responsibly.

what about...
lack of insurance during an accdent completely disabling you?
mental issues whether it be genetic or because of prolonged drgg use causing you to be unable to work or unable to be a part of normal society?
Education is not the only answer to poverty...

Theft is also an answer but it's not legal of course.
I'm not aware of the restrictions for your report though.
Sadly, there are those who would argue that Communism or some form of Socialism is the answer.
