Ever since I can remember (20 odd years) my dad has sat down every night to watch soaps. Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Brookside. As the soaps increased the number of showings per week, he has spent more and more time watching them in front of the telly. Every night of the week. What is the appeal? Please note: no overtly insulting answers please.

Note to Kayla B- in general the drama in UK soaps is much more 'gritty' and goes for realism (well, compared to US soaps), so it isn't reall 'crazy drama' that could be the appeal. Drama, yes, but not crazy (sometimes).

To suraj: isn't it a bit of a waste of life though if it's 5 nights a week?

The poor man is trying to escape the realities of life and not realising he's descending into the sad unrealities of soap life.

Soaps are very addicting. You want to know the answer and the outcome to the person's delemma. You want to know if they respond the way that you would respond. It is kind of a self check on what you would do if presented with the situation in the soap. It is also a very good way to ignore your own pesonal problems. If you submerge yourself in an imaginary world of soaps, the drama of your own life can be kept secret and closed.

In my opinion, the appeal is just the crazy drama from soaps. I don't watch them but my mom is a Days of Our Lives fan and every now and then I sit and watch it with her, and I get hooked, keep asking questions like "Who's he? What'd he do that for?"

know what you mean, my dad is exactly the same... and on the very rare occasions that he cant get to the tv... there is always a video in to tape it. You can actually tell the time by him.... He might be getting a little forgetful in his old age but he never forgets what time his soaps are on

is it possibly used to fill a void that father has in his life subsidising a lack of drama in his life for fictional characters, or it could be that there aint a whole lot on television at those times.

Because he likes them!!!! Let him enjoy his soaps! lol Nothing wrong with it. He's a good guy, right? It's may just be his way of unwinding. Let him be and get him a drink or a snack!

which dad doesn't? mine does, but not every night, i'd say 5 nights a week. mainly eastenders.

dads work hard, they have the right to "chill" and enjoy TV time.

Ask him yourself, perhaps you might get a better answer from him than from the contributors on here. No disrespect to everyone else, but you know...

you will understand when you get older. After work you are tired and you veg out in front of the tv. think about it its not like parents get to go out every night of the week.
