I believe there was definitely a forbidden attraction between the two. It's been so long since I've read it, but I believe there a brief scene in the kitchen in which Marian is trying on a bonnet for Shane. It's very clear (at least in the subtext) that she was looking for his approval and possibly even flirting with him.
You can also look to Spark Notes (http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/shane/) for more information on their relationship. Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shane_(novel)) has an entry on it, too.
