The genre, not the people. I just wanted to buy my roommate a CD to cheer her up and I need some ideas.

Goth to cheer someone up? I could run an endless stream of paradoxial statements but i just don't have the inclination.

Okay real Goth music is just heavy on emotion i'd say get her a cd by one of the bands that founded the goth scene The Cure (although they'd never admit it) also Siouxsie and the Banshee's and Sisters of Mercy. The Cure did occasionally sneak in a happy song or two especially on the Wish and Wild Mood Swings cd. But before that they'd make even Tony Robbins doubt his self worth.

Hmmm, goth? or punk? As far as goth goes - i'm not sure. Punk/rock - there's My Chemical Romance, Green Day, LostProphets, Simple Plan, ect. Good luck
