My 1995 Ford Explorer 4.0L is having trouble upshifting.

If your at a stoplight for example, and you accelerate, it will not shift up to 2nd unless you let off the gas for a second or two, then it will kick into second. You can then get up to 60+ mph, but if you give it too much gas, it will pop back into first [even if your going like 40 mph].

Its been doing this for a year and i put over 15,000 miles on it... it has to be an electronic problem, possibly a sensor right??

ALSO, the overdrive light flashes constantly since this happend, sometimes when its in 4x4 that light will flash too.

Anyone have any idea whats wrong?

THANK YOU!!

find your modulater valve, wich is usually a small round can with an air tit., usually down on side of tranny above the pan. There has to be a peice of rubber hose securely and tightly pushed on over the air tit.. Now follow the metal tube from the other end of that rubber spluce up behind the engine, to another air tit, some ware behind carb or fuel rail, again make shure it is tight and in good condition.

If you have non of this, then it is a speed senser that has connections to what shifts the tranny

Haynes Manual
What you do is get the Haynes Repair Manual for your Year and model of vehicle at Auto Zone, or another automotive repair shop. The manual will show you what and how to do the repairs.

I have had tranny slips before. When was the last time you did a transmission oil change too.

Also take vehicle in to an Auto Zone or other store that will do a free vehicle check with their sensors.

First examine the OD change/sensor (in case you have one) mutually as a broken velocity sensor would surely reason a return to default mode (which contain kicking out the overdrive and sending on the sunshine and make it stay inder third kit), you will additionally be conscious a difficulty with your speedo and ABS in case you have it (relies upon on if early or late ninety 5). yet once you haven't got those different warning signs, it relatively is greater possibly which you have a transmission difficulty. The digital overdrive (as indicated via the digital button on the shift handle) would have burned up a solenoid. ought to take to a save if it relatively is the difficulty, except your savvy. examine the trans fluid point first, if its low, verify to fill it and/or flush it if grimy. this would help a trans difficulty such as this. guy made trans fluid can relax a grimy solenoid. I even have seen it earlier. different opportunities would contain a nasty sensor decrease than the hood (such as TPS) sending a nasty sign to the trans. nonetheless this would possibly throw a examine engine gentle besides. you are able to reset this difficulty (and any codes diagnostic codes) via removing the adverse battery cable for thirty seconds. that's going to take place lower back if some thing is broken, yet interior the intervening time, perchance you are able to sense the difficulty earlier the trans is going into limp mode.

Have you driven a Ford off a cliff lately? Fords run very well and handle superbly and are very comfortable when parked. Comfort is important when you are waiting for assistance.

check the transmission fluid level. Also smell the dipstick to see if it smells burnt. If so, have the tranny fluid and filter replaced before your tranny fries.
