1. The release of the Iraq Study Group report. If the Iraq War ends in the next couple of years, it will go down in history as the plan that was adopted as a strategy of withdrawal. If the Iraq War stretches on longer than that, it will be an historical footnote.
2. The execution of Saddam Hussein, because of the video record.
3. Democrats taking over the Congress. Political shifts like these are usualyl pretty memorable.

Here's my vote--plus the reasons why:
1) Confirmation of the human-caused nature of global warming. This will be a major issue for decades--and will lead to fundamental changes in how we implement technology and produce energy.
2) The November election. This signaled a fundamental shift of the American electorate away from the conservative pattern that has dominated American politics for decades.
3) The discovery of liquid water on Mars. This is important becasue it shows two things that will be very important in the future--a) while we don't know if Mars has every had life, we now know for certain that the conditions for life to exist exist outside the Earth; and b) the basic resources for humans to live on Mars are present--we can (eventually) colonize there.

Cal Ripken was out in the Hall of Fame... I dunno if that means anything to you but I am from MD so it was big here... Kurt Cobain earned the highest amount of money for being passed away.... in 06 he beat Elvis....thats all I got, I can't think of stuff right now...sorry
