I believe the answer to this is simple-hardly anyone works in albert square thats why so they can't afford it. Apart from in the pub ( where most of the story lines happen) all the other people don't really seem to work that much- part from pat who seems to have her fingers in many pies..car lot, bookies,cafe but not even she works all day. And then there's max branning but we all know what he's doing with his time.............
