There is a desktop computer that we use in our house, but I will be purchasing an HP Pavilion laptop very soon. I want to network the laptop to the desktop so that the laptop can share the desktop's DSL connection. What is the best router to use for this purpose?

i have used linksys for the past 8 years with no problems. i have the 802.11b wireless-B router.

I use a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHz for my home netwokr, and love it. My desktop is wired through CAT5 straight to it, but the laptop connects anywhere in the house, and the wife's computer and kid's computer upstairs connect nice and fast via wireless as well. My son's computer is a bit old, and this router supports the usb "jump drive" type antennae to the wireless, so I didn't even have to put in an ethernet card of any type.
Easy set up, excellent security, and perfect for dsl. Just remember to change the settings of the connection in the router set up to PPPoE - I missed that when I installed it and it took me a coupel days to get it working :)

You will plug the DSL modem directly into the router then each computer into the router as well, the laptop will not be using the desktop's Internet connection, both will be connected to the router.
Anyway, I use NetGear and it works great. I have used quite a few of their products (hub, switch, router) before and they have all worked great.

Netgear is very good. I definetly reccomend it. I've had it for 2 years and it works perfectly. and good choice for laptop. i have it(even though im 11) but im getting a vio with my acting money that i make.( you heard me im famous) I've traveled to 14 countries so far this year and i still get connection in europe. go to Fry's to get it. they're having a sale

The one that i use is called linksys and its the best one i have owned. That one would be a great one for you.

belkins is what i was suggested to use and really like it. you might give it a try.
