Why cant i use aim? my parents say that it isnt safe, but I tell them that is is. Is AIM safe or should I stop using it?

no one can take over your computer just by you using AIM, what they mean by "unsafe" is what they mean when they say "myspace is unsafe", when you're on the internet talking with someone you don't really know for sure who you're talking to. "internet preditors" thrive on this, they could be a 45 year old sex offender posing as a 14 year old girl to befriend you and get you to meet them somewhere... your parents are just afraid for your well-being... if you don't talk to people you don't know (just like in real life "don't talk to strangers") you will be just fine ;)

It is fine, unless you are talking with someone you don't know...they could very easily take control of your computer and get anything they want off of it. They could also trick you into doing something that you should not do.

Listen to your parents.
AIM is a big security hole allowing hackers and crackers access to your computer infecting it with viruses which will likely eventually mess up your computer unless you have nearly flawless computer maintenance.
Further, that exposes you to online sexual predators that look for kids to have sex with.
