Check out this guy, Col. Robert Howard, recommended for the Medal of Honor three times, awarded once. He may take Audie Murphy's title as most decorated American soldier

Audie Murphey, the most decorated soldier in American military history. He amounted, more or less, to the poster boy soldier. Read a biography about his life and you'll understand why.

Perhaps Alvin C. York. During WWII this Tennessee native single handedly silenced a line of German machine gun nests in the battle of the Argonne Forest in France. He flanked their positions and finally found a vantage point that looked straight down their trenches, and with his expert marksmanship, killed one after another until they surrendered.
