Not really, im guessing that your running xp, and 512 is more than enough for xp, it will deffintally speed things up once you start it, but I doubt you will see any difference in start up time. The biggest thing that your going to see for start up time that you can do is get rid of useless start up items, download ccleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com) and run though the 4 different sections in there.

Depends on the Operating System, but generally yes more RAM will give you better performance. If running XP it is a no brainer. You should also do disk cleanup as well as check for disk errors. There are also registry cleaner programs out there too that can help performance. Lastly, look at your msconfig (in XP) and troubleshoot any non essential startup items (disable) - you'll be surprised what is running each time you boot.

More RAM usually will speed up the processing part. Doesn't affect the bootup as much. You say you don't have many programs on the computer yet, but you didn't say if those programs are starting up when you boot up. Most programs want to be started immediately. It assures you will use them. But most programs should not be allowed to boot up. Go to your start up and stop everything from booting up automatically, especially such things as games, Office Suite, instant message programs, etc. When you are ready to use them, they only take a minute or two to install, so do that when you need them, not before. See if this helps the boot up process. I've done it with all my computers, and I am amazed how much faster it makes them run, especially when starting up.

get rid of some startup programs that are not necessary by using msconfig go into startup and just see if some are actually slowing the boot process down. do this by unchecking different things to track them down, once you've done that because this is only temporary and will slow it down even more if u leave them unchecked, recheck them reboot go back in and find the registry location which is displayed, run regedit and just delete the startup key for it. just be careful what your deleteing in the registry dont go nuts, might help you out thow good luck

You may have viruses that are running on your startup as well, I had some on my laptop and once I deleted them, my computer went from taking 5 minutes to taken half a minute. Use tune up utilities, it has a great start up process manager.

remove any discs or removable drives while booting, the white bar indicates that it's trying to find boot records from other sources other than your hard disk
