We are making bowls.

When I took my ceramics class in high school each student started out with a 1 lb block. That was more than enough to make a bowl. Depending on the size of the bowls you want them to make. I would guess 1/4 lb for a cereal sized bowl. So that would be around 9 lbs. I saw that someone else gave you that answer too.

If at all possible I would have at least 2pds per student. Because they are learning mistakes can and will happen. To me 2pds sounds like a good bare minimum for teaching. But it would help to know what method is being used to make the bowls throwing, coil, pinch etc.

try one pound per student, allowing excess for mistakes
