I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse and i can tell you that milk thistle will not shrink stones. This herb is taken for the liver. It helps to clean it out and improve liver function. It also is taken if you are going out on a drinking spree. Stop taking them it wont help. You could take take 1000mg of lecithin a day, this is an aid for bile production. Take this after you have had them out. When your gallbladder is removed bile will stay in the liver and gets used as and when its needed but it will not be a concentrated liquid, it will be weak so Lecithin will thicken it thus helping your digestive processes to work better. I know I have had that operation.

RE:
How well does milk thistle for gallstones really work?
I've been taking milk thistle for gallstones while waiting for treatment for a while now, I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and if it helped reduce their size at all or if it just held them at bay?

I have used other herbs that are from South America for Gallstones. The herb I used is called Chanca Piedra which means in Spanish stone breaker. South American Indians have been using this herb for centuries for gallstones and kidney stones. I took it for a two weeks and no more gallstones.

Milk thistle is basically a liver rejuvenation product so I don't know if it works for gall stones. However I had liver problems (doctors were worried I might die) and since taking a course of milk thistle I have had no problems touch wood.

The cause is crystallized cholesterol.
Dietary fiber, C, E, Lecithin, moderate coffee and alcohol, and switching from cows milk to soy for milk protein help (especially as preventive).
Legumes, Sugar, Polyunsaturated fats and (with stones) more than one cup of coffee are bad.
