I hear that it takes 1-2 weeks for you to get a state ID card from the DMV if you never had one before. If you did have one before and you're making a name change (from a court order), does it take longer for you to receive a replacement? About how long does it take?

I'm trying to decide whether or not I should first get the ID card and then change my name or if I should wait until after I've changed my name to get my ID card.

When I got mine it took about a week and a half. Change your name before getting a new ID so you don't have to go thru the process twice.

you would be better off waiting until you get your name changed and a new social security card.

otherwise you'll end up paying for the ID twice.
